16 years ago today, we tied the knot in one of Hong Kong’s most iconic and beautiful places, Kowloon Walled City Park, surrounded by the people we love. That day marked the beginning of a wonderful adventure, one that continues to fill my heart with joy.

Stepping back for a moment feels right. What happened in Tai Po is heartbreaking, and my mind keeps circling back to the people and the community living through it. Hong Kong shaped pieces of who I am, so when it hurts, I feel it too.

I’m pausing my posts for a couple of weeks, and the book release will shift to December 20.
Thank you for holding space for this pause, and for the people who need it most right now.

Hong Kong was, and in many ways still is home. Anything that touches Hong Kong touches my heart. Today, my thoughts are with Tai Po and its community.
My heart is with you, and I’m holding you close.

Adoption Awareness Month is wrapping up, and honestly, it feels like two different worlds.
Inside the adoption community, we’re growing, learning, and challenging old narratives.
Outside of it?
I’m still seeing the same outdated takes recycled like it’s a nostalgia trend.

This isn’t a call-out; it’s a reminder that awareness doesn’t fit neatly into one month.
Real understanding takes time, listening, and a willingness to update the storyline.

Just leaving this thought here.

Last July, my very first chapter book, Erin’s Journal: 6th Grade Big Project, won 3rd Place in the Firebird International Book Awards - Preteen Fiction.
I was beyond proud that a story about adoption was being celebrated in mainstream preteen fiction, not tucked into a niche category.
Erin’s voice, her humour, and yes… her sassy cat were officially award-winning!
This wasn’t just a trophy; it was proof that honest, heartfelt adoption stories belong on every bookshelf.

Today, I am MAD beyond words.

Mad at the ignorance that keeps showing up, even under a documentary about children living in the harshest conditions imaginable.

Mad at the comments that say, “We should just adopt them,” as if adoption were a simple fix, a one-way ticket to happiness.
A thousand NO!!!!!
That’s not how it works.
Those of us in the adoption community know better. We’ve learned, often through tears, through listening to adoptees, through unlearning what we were told, that adoption is not a rescue mission. It’s not a fairy tale.
It’s complex.
It’s loss.
It’s identity.
It’s trauma AND love.

But outside our community, the world is still being fed black-and-white stories by media, by influencers, by “feel-good” content that turns children’s pain into moral lessons.

I’m angry because these lies hurt real people.
They silence adoptees.
They erase families.
They make us forget to ask the hardest, most important questions:
How are we still here in 2025?
And how can we change the narrative, together?

If you’re feeling this anger too, don’t scroll past it.
Sit with it.
Let it move you toward truth.

Proud mama moment!
There’s nothing like seeing my girls enjoy the books I wrote, inspired by them, for them. Watching them read, question, and laugh reminds me why I do this.

My hope is to help more families start the conversation about adoption, creating a safe space where kids feel free to ask, wonder, and share what’s in their hearts.

Our daughters are confident talking about their adoption because we started early, welcomed every question, and gave age-appropriate answers. There’s no secret and no taboo. They know they can trust us with their feelings.

Their safety and well-being start with us. It’s our job to educate ourselves, acknowledge them, and make them feel seen, heard, and safe. Their needs always come first. Because when children feel safe and heard, they can blossom into their fullest selves.
